0n July 19, 1985, I visited the oldest educational station in South America, Radio Sutatenza. Radio Sutatenza is a part of activities carried out by a social communication organization, Accion Cultural Popular (ACPO). ACPO engages in activities like fundamental education, information, entertainment, etc. thru "Radiophonic Schools" (Escuelas Radiofonicas), as well as in publication of a weekly newspaper "El Campesino", educational books, records and tapes. First of all I will introduce to you their educational activities.

Their program can be divided into 4 sections: (1) Didactica, (2) Informacion, (3) Complementarias, and (4) Promocional.

Section (3) Complementarias: This occupies most of the program broadcast at the station, and can be classified to the following three categories: a) De la Didactica, b) De la Informacion, c) De Servicio. Let's have a brief look at each category, showing the representative program including its characteristics.

At moment, 70,000 copies (printed by color offset) are circulated. There are more than 1600 distributors in 910 municipalities around the country. The newspaper has three sections: information (general events, information and especially articles on agriculture), recreation (comic, game, riddle, joke, historical article, family guide, sports information) and knowledge (useful lectures on various themes).Textbooks for Integral Fundamental Education
Textbooks, six in number, provide the basic contents for the ACPO educational program.

This is an audio-visual system complementing the ACPO textbooks mentioned above, and can be utilized as the necessity arises. The disk has 2 types (33rpm/ 45rpm). ACPO has a record press machine which is able to make 1500 disks a day. For those who have no disk player, ACPO prepares cassette tapes. They
have a cassette tape dubbing machine which can dub 6 tapes at once. It takes only 3 minutes to dub one C-60 tape.History Of Escuelas Radiofonicas
Activity of ACPO was inaugurated at a small mountain village of Sutatenza, Department of Boyaca. It was on August 23, 1947 that,a young priest Jose Joaquin Salcedo Guarin came to parish of San Bartolome in the village. He installed a transmitter remodelling a receiver he took with him, at Santa Rosa de Viterbo Seminary. Test transmission was conducted for about a month until he got a broadcasting license and a prefix "HK7HM" from Ministry of Communications on October 17. On October 16, 1947, the first cultural program was broadcasted, playing an orchestral music performed by farmers of Sutatenza and the comments. Thus Radio Sutatenza was born. There had been Radio Sutatenza (HJGP 1560kHz 1kW) in Sutatenza village until early 1970's, but it was abolished
by introducing a high power transmitter in Bogota station. For your information, Cadena Sutatenza used the following SW outlets: HJGO 3250kHz (l0kW), HJGW 326OkHz (l0kW), HJGC 5075kHz (25kW), HJID 6075kHz (l0kW), HJGO 9655kHz (10kw), HJGZ 119OOkHz (l0kW) and HJGI 15235kHz (l0kW). HJGC & HJID are still preserved for emergency use, so these outlets are announced in their full ID.Program and its Characteristics
Cadena Sutatenza conducted 24 hour service from February 1 to July 31, 1985, in order to broadcast an educational program presented by Ministerio de Educacion Nacional "CAMINA". Aim of "CAMINA" was to make the cultural/educational level up of ACPO listeners through the special program. With the end of the educational course, they returned to a usual schedule (0400-2400) on August 1.
