Fernando Botero Sculptures
Fernando Botero is Medellin's most famous artist. The art museum has an entire floor of his work and the plaza in front has about two dozen of his sculptures.
There's something just odd about talking to your girlfriend
next to a statue of a giant winged topless woman.
One of his more famous paintings reproduced as a mural.
This is not by Botero. It's one of the best known works by Medellin painter Francisco Antonio Cano (1865-1935). The theme is on the mid-1800s when people from the Medellin area spread out into the unpopulated surrounding mountains to start coffee farms. Three of Colombia's major cities (Manizales, Armenia, and Pereira) were founded during this period (roughly 1860 to 1910). I had seen the copies of this before but I was thrilled to see the original in Medellin. Of course, photos were not allowed. This is the best image I could find in a web search.
